This night belongs exclusively to the Swiss goalkeeper, Yann Sommer

The Swiss goalkeeper will not forget for the rest of his life, the night of May 6, 2025.

Yann Sommer was the Inter`s figure against FC Barcelona in an european historic night for the italian team.

Yann Sommer (born on , December 17, 1988) will not forget for the rest of his life, the night of May 6, 2025. This night belongs to him! The Swiss international goalkeeper was the one who kept his team, Inter, standing, which in its home "Giuseppe Meazza" was receiving a barrage of attacks from Hansi Flick's Barcelona. And yet the 36-year-old goalkeeper, with impressive interventions, gave the Italian team the opportunity to prevail 4-3 (3-3 first leg) and qualify for the 7th time in its long history in the final of the top inter-club competition, on May 31 in Munich, where it will await the winner of the other semi-final (Paris Saint-Germain or Arsenal).

Who would have expected that after the amazing game at Montjuic in Milan, an even more shocking duel would take place.

The qualification to the “Giuseppe Meazza” changed hands three times, with the “nerazzurri” being the ones who got the first of the two tickets. This is the seventh time that Inter has qualified for the UEFA Champions League final, with 50% of successes (three victories and three defeats).

Sommer

Sommer came through the Basel academy and signed a professional contract in 2007. He was initially loaned to Vaduz and then to Grasshoppers. In 2011, he became Basel's first-choice goalkeeper, with whom he won four consecutive Swiss championships. In 2014, he was acquired by Borussia Mönchengladbach. In the winter transfer window of 2023, he was transferred to Bayern Munich for 8 million euros for the 2019–20 season.

On 7 August 2023, Sommer joined Italian club Inter Milan,[40] signing a contract until 2026. He was sold to Inter for 6.75 million Euros. Sommer won his first Derby della Madonnina against AC Milan, as Inter thrashed their rivals 5–1.

Sommer was the starting goalkeeper for Inter Milan the entire season, as the team won the Italian League title for a landmark 20th time in their history. Also in his maiden year with Inter Milan, he won the Supercoppa Italiana. He finished the season as the goalkeeper with the most clean sheets and in the league's team of the season.

For 120 minutes, the "Giuseppe Meazza" was transformed into the Mecca of football. Where, miraculously, Inter and Barcelona managed to give us a clash, even better than the 3-3 draw in Barcelona! In a legendary semi-final with seven goals, twists and turns and a crazy heartbeat that was decided in extra time (3-3 on aggregate), Inter, with a golden goal by Davide Fratesi in the 99th minute, emerged as the winner 4-3 in the match of the year and booked the golden ticket to the Champions League final!.

In the 21st minute, after pressure in the center, the Dutch right-back Dumfries ran past the Polish goalkeeper Szczesny and gave a through pass for the Argentine, Lautaro Martinez, who scored the 1-0 into an empty net. . With this goal, the Inter captain reached 9 in 14 appearances in this year's UEFA Champions League, while becoming the first Argentine since Lionel Messi in 2019 to find the net in the round of 16, quarter-finals and semi-finals in the top club competition in the same season.

In the 42nd minute, central defender Cubarsi brought down Lautaro in the penalty area. Polish referee Marciniak pointed to the penalty spot after a VAR tip-off and Hakan Calhanoglu scored from the penalty spot for 2-0.

Barcelona ... resurrected in six minutes

If this year's Barcelona under Hansi Flick has proven anything, it's that it can score big goals. So they quickly got to work. And in the 54th minute, after a sweet cross from Martin, Eric Garcia found himself in a forward position in the heart of the defense and with a wonderful placement reduced the score (2-1), putting the Catalans back in the game.

Three minutes later, the Spaniard, Garcia, touched the equalizer when he unobstructedly beat Sommer with the goal at his mercy. But the Swiss stretched his body and made (perhaps) the save of the year, preventing a 2-2... temporarily, however. In the 60th minute, the "mad" Barcelona reached the equalizer when, from a new cross from Martin, the midfielder Dani Olmo won the nail-biting header and equalized at 2-2.

But what the formidable 17-year-old who sent the ball into the bodies of the Inter players on a free kick failed to do, Dioskouros achieved from the opposite side! In the 88th minute, Pedri found the unmarked Brazilian left winger Rafinha in the area, who was initially beaten by Sommer, but on the rebound he marked (with his right foot this time) the other corner for the total upset.

In the 90th + 3rd minute, Yamal could have sealed the qualification but the ball found the crossbar of Inter, which finally received the kiss of life in injury time. Seconds later, the Dutch right back, Dumfries, made a turn in the area and the stopper Acerbi in a for... role sent the ball into the sky of the net for the deafening 3-3, equalizing the score of the first match.

Fatally, the game went to extra time, where Simone Inzaghi's Inter achieved the upset within the upset! In the 99th minute, the Nerazzurri managed to drive the ball into the opponent's area, with Taremi laying the ball to the unmarked, Davide Fratesi who marked the corner of the goal, writing the 4-3 which was the final result.

Thus, Inter on May 31 will claim the fourth Champions League in its history at the “Allianz Arena” in Munich. The Nerazzurri are returning to the final two years after their failed attempt in Istanbul in 2023 against Manchester City (0-1, Rodri).
