Expensive investments, cheap excuses: Mastantuono, Huijsen and the Mbappe enigma in the shadow of City

Manos Staramopoulos • 5 de marzo de 2026

All three players are doubtful for next week's clash against Manchester City.

The stands of the “Santiago Bernabeu” emptied before the final whistle, on a night that captured the overall picture of this season for Real Madrid: lack of intensity, limited creativity, absence of clear ideas and obvious psychological wear and tear. The blow was not only in terms of points, but also deeply symbolic, as the team showed itself unable to handle the pressure at a pivotal point in the year.

Opposite them was a perfectly prepared and disciplined Getafe of Pepe Bordallas, who presented a clear game plan. With clear roles, defensive cohesion and speed in transition, Getafe exploited every weakness of the home team. Matias Satriano's decisive goal came as a natural progression from their overall consistency, while David Soria was a point of reference under the posts.

Getafe's achievement takes on even greater value when considering their financial reality. With a budget that is clearly lower than the sums spent in the summer on young Argentine left-footed midfielder Franco Mastantuono and also young central defender Dean Huijsen, the club from the southern suburbs of Madrid manages to present a competitive, solid and clearly identified team. The comparison is inevitable: the investment in young footballers at high cost has not yet translated into competitive stability.

Franco Mastantuono, was sent off in an immature manner, leaving the team with a numerical disadvantage at a crucial point, while Huijsen received a card that will put him out of the next match, further straining the already fragile balance. The indiscipline and lack of pressure management are clear signs of a team that has not yet acquired the required maturity.

In the competitive phase, the absence of Kylian Mbappe is decisive. The official update on the knee sprain opened more questions than it closed. His presence in selected matches and his absence from crucial European games suggest that the management of the injury has not been ideal. His goals have served as a constant reference in a team that often lacks pure creation. If the problem proves to be long-term, the consequences could be catastrophic.

All eyes are now on the UEFA Champions League round of 16 and the clash with Manchester City. Against a team with a competitive identity, automation and experience at the highest level, Real Madrid are called upon to present a completely different face. With defensive absences, dubious psychology and question marks over Mbappe's fitness, qualification requires overcoming. The contrast between the structured, disciplined Getafe and the wasteful but unstable Real clearly captures the paradox of modern football reality: budget creates expectations, not cohesion. And without cohesion, even the largest organizations risk seeing the season derailed before reaching its final stretch.
