Kylian Mbappe, one of the brightest stars of Real Madrid and of course of the UEFA Champions League, may have scored two goals, but he was unable to prevent the Spanish team from losing 4-2 to Benfica for the 8th matchday of the top club competition.
Speaking to reporters afterwards, Mbappe commented among other things:
“I don’t have a clear explanation. We are not managing to be consistent in our game and that is a problem that we have to solve. We cannot be good one day and not the next, it is not worthy of a champion team. It hurts a little because we wanted to use February to improve, but we deserve our current position. We have to be more consistent. We are missing a little bit of everything. I am not going to say that it is just a problem of mentality or just football. I think it is a systemic problem. And in the Champions League, every detail counts. If you don't have all the ingredients to win a match at this level, you get crushed."
Meanwhile,
Mbappe, who has scored
36 goals in 29 matches in all competitions this season. In fact, the French forward was perhaps the great protagonist of the group stage as he finished top scorer with 13 goals.
He already had a thrilling lead of 11 goals - four more than Harry Kane - equaling the historical record held by Cristiano Ronaldo. But to be sure, and to surpass his idol, he added even more goals in Lisbon.
Of course, despite his efforts, in the end they were not enough for Real Madrid to advance as one of the top 8 teams in Europe after their defeat in Lisbon by Benfica .
Mbappe started this season with two goals on the first matchday against Marseille, followed by a hat-trick away at Kairat Almaty. He had to wait until the fifth matchday, against Olympiacos, to satisfy his hunger by scoring 4 goals in a 4-3 away victory.
In the penultimate game, against Monaco, he scored another two. And he added two more against Benfica to reach 13, setting an all-time record.
Behind the Frenchman is Bayern Munich's English forward Harry Kane, who scored against PSV Eindhoven and reached 8 goals in this year's competition.
Third is Norwegian international forward Erling Haaland, who returned to the goals that helped City prevail over Galatasaray
