"Crazy" turnaround for Aston Villa at Chelsea's home 1-2
Aston Villa secured their eighth consecutive victory, defeating Chelsea with goals from Ollie Watkins.
Aston Villa have equalled their longest winning streak in their history, reaching 11 consecutive wins in all competitions after a 2-1 win over Chelsea in the Premier League, a feat that has only been achieved twice before, in 1897 and 1914.
Unai Emery's team became only the third in Villa's history to achieve such a run, repeating a feat that was achieved more than a century ago.
On a personal level, Emery also reached 11 consecutive wins as a manager for the second time in his Premier League career, following the same run he achieved with Arsenal in October 2018. After the completion of the 18th matchday, Aston Villa are on
39 points and three points away from the top of the table.
Chatter and... punishment
What a GAME that was at "Stamford Bridge"! Aston Villa was not there in the first half, they suffered from Chelsea but they stayed up and... they stabbed them in the replay. England international forward Ollie Watkins took it personally: he scored twice, single-handedly turning the game "over", with the final 2-1 adding another three points to Unai Emery's team.
With this victory, Villa reached its eighth consecutive Premier League and with 39 points they are again -3 from Arsenal. On the other hand, the Blues missed the chance to overtake Liverpool and remained in 5th place with 29 points.
Chelsea had one of their best first 45 minutes of the season and rightly went into the dressing room with the lead. Maresca's players showed their determination early on by entering decisively and filling Martinez's area. In the 18th minute, Argentine Enzo Fernandez had a shot on goal when he curled in from the height of the area, but the ball went just wide of the left post.
Chelsea had a second classic chance in the 24th minute, when Joao Pedro made a close call, but Emiliano Martinez saved the goal. The vice was tightening, Villa were unable to hold on to the ball and attack, and finally what... seemed to be coming, based on the image and dynamics, happened. From James' corner in the 37th minute, the ball found the body of Joao Pedro, ending up in the net for the Blues' lead.
Chelsea kept their foot on the gas at the beginning of the second half. Villa suffered, but endured and... survived, turning the tables. Emery strengthened his lineup with a triple change in the 58th minute, with the match changing drastically.
In the 61st minute, Villa's loud warning came with Camara who found himself facing the Spanish goalkeeper, but was unable to beat him. However, two minutes later Watkins, who had just entered the game, "punished" Chelsea by beating goalkeeper Sanchez in a one-on-one.
The momentum was now clearly showing Villa, who began to miss one chance after another. Sanchez kept Chelsea... out of the match, but in the 84th minute the absolute coolness came. Belgian midfielder, Tielemans executed the corner, Watkins jumped higher than everyone and made the turnover for the Villans, who kept their lead until the end. Now all eyes are on the big match on Tuesday (30/12), as Arsenal welcomes Aston Villa to the "Emirates". .
