Apostolos Filis: "With Ancelotti, Brazil will become more European" Interview
Former goalkeeper, Apostolos Filis speaks to Discoveryfootball.com editor-in-chief, Manos Staramopoulos “Football belongs to those who can withstand the pressure”
Apostolos Filis is one of those goalkeepers who learned to live with the loneliness of the goal posts. He always watches football with a clear eye and a sober judgment. The former ace of Panionios and PAOK, who later worked as an assistant to the Ukrainian, Oleg Blokhin in the technical leadership of Olympiakos, talks about this year’s UEFA Champions League and his beloved Brazil, with the wisdom of a man who has experienced the game from the inside.
“The Champions League,” he tells us, “is an organization that does not forgive mistakes. The jersey alone is not enough; it needs depth, personality and duration.”
When asked about the favorites, his answer is direct but not frivolous.
“Real Madrid is always there. They know how to manage big nights, they have the winning spirit. Barcelona seem to be rediscovering their rhythm and identity. Manchester City have the mechanical perfection that the times demand, while Liverpool carry intensity and tradition.”
However, he also stands by two other clubs that, as he points out, “can upset the balance.” “Paris Saint-Germain has quality and ambition, while Bayern Munich has the stability of the German school. In such competitions, experience is a currency of great value.”
His speech remains measured, almost didactic. “In the end, the one who can best manage the pressure will advance. Football is a game of details. One wrong step, one moment of inaction, and everything changes. I know it well from the goalkeeper's position."
The conversation turns to the World Cup and his eyes light up. "I have supported the Brazilian national team since I was a little kid. The Brazilian national team is not just a team; it is an idea, it is rhythm, it is a smile." He believes that the new era can bring an interesting combination of elements. "With the Italian, Carlo Ancelotti on the bench, I expect a Brazil with more European discipline, but without losing its creative spark. Ancelotti knows how to balance the locker room and utilize talent."
And of course, the question about Neymar could not be missed. Filis smiles. "Neymar is a footballer who can make the impossible possible. He is capable of the best and the worst. If he finds concentration and a clear mind, he can lead the Brazilian national team to great heights. If not, he can become a factor of instability. It all depends on his mental state.”
In closing, he returns to the big picture. “Football is changing, it’s becoming faster, more demanding. But the essence remains the same: heart, faith and the right decisions in critical moments. Whether we’re talking about European clubs or national teams, in the end the one who believes in his strength the most wins.”
His voice, calm but confident, reminds us that true goalkeepers never stop reading the game – even when they’re off the pitch.
