The landscape at Stamford Bridge is changing. The sale of Boehly and Walter shares is on the table

Todd Boehly and Mark Walter, two of the most powerful figures in American sports business, have held talks about selling their stakes in the London club.

Four years after Chelsea's major ownership change, the balance at Stamford Bridge could be shifting again. Todd Boehly and Mark Walter, two of the most powerful figures in American sports business, have held talks about selling their stakes in the London club, according to the Financial Times.

Their involvement in Chelsea began in 2022, when they, along with Clearlake Capital and Swiss businessman Hansjörg Wyss, were part of the BlueCo investment consortium that acquired the club for £2.5 billion (€2.92 billion).

Clearlake remained the dominant shareholder, controlling 61.54%, while Boehly, Walter and Wyss each hold around 12.8%.

Now, however, it appears that at least two of the people who entered English football with great ambitions are considering a different path.

Walter's case is of particular interest. The discussion about his possible departure from Chelsea comes at a time of intense realignment of his sports investments. Just a few days earlier, he had sold his majority stake to the Los Angeles Lakers, making a huge business transaction.

This, of course, does not mean that he is leaving sports. Quite the opposite. He remains connected to the Los Angeles Dodgers, as well as the Los Angeles Sparks, having created a portfolio that spans different sports and markets.

The picture is similar for Boehly. Even if he completes his exit from Chelsea, his ties with European football are not severed. BlueCo also controls the French Strasbourg, which is an important part of the multi-ownership model that has been created in recent years.

However, interest is inevitably turning to London.

BlueCo's time at Chelsea was marked by massive investment, unprecedented player mobility and an attempt to build a different operating model. At the same time, however, the coexistence of such powerful investors has not always been without merit.

The possible sale of Boehly and Walter's stakes does not necessarily mean a change of control, as Clearlake still holds a clear majority. However, it would constitute a significant change in the ownership structure and, above all, a strong message for the future of the club.

At the same time, there is no indication that the two businessmen are considering a similar move for the Dodgers. The Los Angeles organization is in an extremely strong position, having won two consecutive World Series and reached a valuation of around $7.8 billion (6.74 billion euros).

At Stamford Bridge, on the other hand, a new chapter may be about to open. And when people managing billions change positions, their moves are rarely just a stock sale. They usually herald something bigger.
