Joao Pereira only lasted 8 games, Rui Borges took his place

Joao Pereira, substitute of Ruben Amorin, leaves the technical direction of Sporting Lisbon and is replaced by Rui Borges, formerly of Vitoria Guimaraes.

Rui Borges new trainer of Sporting CP. He has signs until June 2026.

The… experiment with Joao Pereira in the technical leadership of Sporting Lisbon did not work out for the Lions, who immediately proceeded to replace the Portuguese.

The 40-year-old coach who was in the first team only stayed in the first team for 36 days. Despite the fact that he knew people and things since he came from the infrastructure departments but had also worked in the B team of Sporting.

Thus, the successor of Ruben Amorim (who took over at Manchester United) at Sporting Lisbon lasted on the bench for only… 36 days. The bet of promoting Joao Pereira from youth coach to the first team was anything but a win. As during this time the Lions scored just two wins in eight games under his instructions and the management is proceeding with his removal.

43-year-old Rui Borges

Now his place is taken by 43-year-old Rui Borges, who leaves Vitoria Guimaraes in order to be on the bench of his new team on Sunday, which is giving an extremely difficult game against Benfica. The Sporting management will of course pay the amount of 4 million euros to Guimaraes for the latter to let him go.

Borges began his coaching career from small Portuguese teams in 2017 and after a great season at Moreirense, Guimaraes acquired him last summer. With Borges, Guimarães finished undefeated and in second place in the League Phase of the Conference League.

So after 29 games, he leaves Vitoria to take over the Lions to lead them to the title.

Finally, Sporting is temporarily first together with Porto at 37 and with Pereira  on the bench, they have only counted one victory in four league games (1-1-2), two qualifications in the Portuguese Cup (phase of the "8") and two defeats to Arsenal and Bruges in the League Phase of the Champions League.
