First title for "Celeste" team that win to Italy with goal of Luciano Rodríguez

Uruguay win for firts in his history the FIFA World Cup U20 title

The national team of Uruguay beat Italy 1-0 and won its first title in the world cup -20, which was held in Argentina. The victory of "Celeste" ends a streak of four consecutive victories of European teams in the tournament.


The previous four awards were won by Ukraine, England, Serbia and France. South America also captured four consecutive titles from 2001 to ’07.


Luciano Rodríguez scored the winning goal in the 86th minute to give Uruguay a much-deserved win after a full game of dominance against Italy. More than 40,000 fans, mostly cheering for Uruguay, attended the match in Buenos Aires.


These are the main elements that characterized the final as well as the top event hosted by Argentina, as presented by the International Federation of Football History and Statistics (IFFHS), which is represented in Greece by Manos Staramopoulos (editor-in-chief of Discoveryfootball):


* Uruguay had already qualified for two U20 World Cup finals in 1997 and 2013, but lost to Argentina and France.


* Italy's best result before the 2023 final was third place in 2017.


- Uruguay and Italy are in the history of the World Cup. They were the first two winners of the WORLD CUPs in 1930 and 1934.


* Italy won their 6 games before the final with excellent performances against Brazil, England, Colombia and South Korea!


* Uruguay won 6 games for the title, losing only one game to England (2-3). In the other 6 games, 6 matches without conceding a goal with an average goal of 10-0!


* Cesare Casadei (Italy) won the "golden ball" (Best Footballer) and the "golden boot" (Best Scorer with 7 goals) of the competition. He succeeds Diego Maradona, Sergio Aguero and Lionel Messi.



Israel's surprise


* The big surprise of the U20 World Cup 2023 was Israel! Making their debut at the tournament, they reached third place beating South Korea, runners-up in 2019.


* The event was held in Argentina, but was originally planned to be hosted in Indonesia for the first time in history.


* Five-time winners Brazil were knocked out in the quarter-finals by Israel and six-time winners Argentina in the round of 16 by Africa's best team, Nigeria.
