From Costa Rica to Kalamata: Vargas’s journey makes a stop at Toumba

Before introducing himself to the Greek public with two goals against PAOK, Kenneth Vargas had already traversed a footballing path involving various stadiums, demands, and expectations. From Costa Rica to Scotland and then to Kalamata, the 24-year-old forward is seeking the continuity every footballer needs to turn their potential into a consistent presence.
Born on April 17, 2002, he grew up with football as an integral part of his family life. His father—also named Kenneth Vargas—was a professional forward in Costa Rica known by the nickname "Huevo" (Egg). He passed the nickname "Huevito" (Little Egg) on to his son—a small family legacy that accompanies him alongside his given name.
His first significant experience came at Municipal Grecia, where he played on loan from
Herediano. Upon his return, he found the net in his league debut for the first team on January 15, 2022, against Grecia. That year provided him with time and opportunities: ten goals in 41 appearances in his country's top flight.
His next step took him to Edinburgh. On August 7, 2023, he joined Hearts on loan with an option to buy. The Scottish club signed him permanently on March 26, 2024, offering him a five-season contract. It was a chance to test himself in a different environment and broaden his experience. At the same time, his involvement with the youth national teams paved the way for his first call-up to the Costa Rica senior squad in 2021. Another call-up followed in October 2022, though he did not feature in any matches on that occasion. Thus, international commitments were added to the demands of his club career.
He arrived at Kalamata this summer on loan from Hearts.
Things did not get off to the start he had hoped for; an injury kept him sidelined for the opening matches, delaying his chance to find his rhythm and build chemistry with his new teammates.
Toumba provided the first emphatic response. With two goals and a pivotal role in the incident that led to Tsiftsis’s sending-off, he made a substantial contribution to the
3-1 victory over PAOK.
For Panagiotis Christofileas’s team, his performance offers a reason for optimism.
A single night, however successful, does not define a footballer’s entire profile. Yet, it can pave the way forward. Vargas now has the opportunity to build upon what he demonstrated in Thessaloniki and find the space at Kalamata to take a meaningful next step in his career. This will become evident in training sessions, in future appearances, and in how he responds to the team's needs.
