Fernando Llorente: “De la Fuente’s Spain goes to the World Cup to win it” Interview
Spanish striker Fernando Llorente spoke with Discoveryfootball.com in Brussels, about various international football topics
Fernando Llorente was one of the last classic center-forwards of the Spanish school: strength, aerial play, area instinct and football intelligence. World champion with Spain in 2010, with a great career in Spain, Italy and England, today he continues in football from a different role as a UEFA partner, advising on academy development programs.
Manos Staramopoulos, editor-in-chief of Discoveryfootball.com, met him at the Cardo Hotel in Brussels, on the sidelines of the 50th UEFA Congress, for a discussion about the 2026 World Cup, the UEFA Champions League and the new generation of stars.
DF: Which national team do you see as favorites for the World Cup?
«Luis de la Fuente’s Spain are among the big favorites. He dominated the European Championship and has created a team with a clear identity, speed and technical quality. At the same time, the Brazilian national team with the Italian, Carlo Ancelotti in its technical leadership has experience, personality and enormous depth in the roster.
But in a World Cup there is not just one candidate. I also see the Portuguese national team, the Argentine national team and of course the French national team as very strong. They are teams with footballers who can judge competitions.»
DF: Which teams do you single out for the Champions League?
«They are the “usual suspects”. The holders Paris Saint-Germain have now matured as a team. FC Bayern Munich is a constant presence at this level, while you can never leave out FC Barcelona and Real Madrid CF — they are teams made for the competition.
From England, Liverpool F.C., Arsenal F.C. and Manchester City F.C. they have the quality and mentality to go all the way. The Champions League is all about the details.»
DF: Which young players impress you the most?
«Lamine Yamal is a special talent. He has a confidence that you don’t often see at such a young age. Pedri is already a top-level footballer — he reads the game like a veteran. This generation can define the next chapter of European football.»
DF: What is life like after football?
“I’m still in the game, just from a different position. Working with the academies is probably more important than people think. That’s where the future is built. I try to transfer experience and mentality to the young players.
On a personal level, I’m very calm. I’ve been married to Maria Lorente since 2015 and we have four children. Family keeps you grounded — and that’s the most important thing after football.”
His mother advises him
Fernando Llorente's mother, Isabel Torres, has also played a significant role in his life. Despite maintaining a low profile like her husband, Isabel has been crucial to her son's personal and emotional development. Her influence on Fernando extends far beyond the sporting arena, as she provided him with a safe and loving environment during his childhood.
Fernando Llorente has relied heavily on Isabel for emotional support, especially during challenging times in his career, such as when he faced the demands of professional football or injuries. Throughout his career, her constant presence and ability to offer advice and comfort have been essential in maintaining a positive mindset for the player. Fernando has mentioned in several interviews that his mother has always been there to remind him of the importance of family and the balance between professional and personal life.
Fernando and his mother have a close and trusting relationship. Although the player has been away from his family on several occasions due to his international career, he has always maintained a close relationship with Isabel, who has provided him with emotional support and helped him persevere.
