Botafogo celebrates its third national league title

Botafogo has been crowned Brazilian champions for the third time in its history. And the first since 1995, achieving a unique double after also winning the Copa Libertadores.

In a thrilling match at the Nilton Santos Stadium, Botafogo (9/12) secured its first Brazilian league title in almost three decades. It defeated São Paulo 2-1. The victory follows its success in the Copa Libertadores, marking a remarkable season for the club, which is now owned by American billionaire John Textor.

Ending the season with 79 points in 38 matches, Botafogo managed to surpass second-placed Palmeiras by six points, claiming the league title for the third time in its storied history.

Jefferson Savarino opened the scoring in the 37th minute, sending the home crowd into a frenzy. But a rare defensive slip allowed William Gomes to equalise in the 63rd minute. Just as extra time seemed imminent, Gregore emerged as the hero, scoring the decisive goal in injury time, adding another chapter to a rollercoaster season.

Gregore, who had been sent off in the first minute of the final against Atletico Mineiro, showed resilience, helping his team win their first South American title with a 3-1 victory a few days earlier.

Morale boost

The title is a major boost for John Textor, who has expressed skepticism about the rapid success since taking over three years ago.

“I can’t really say I believed it,” he mused. “Having ambition doesn’t always lead to titles, this happened much earlier than we expected. We’re delighted with the result.”

Having faced a storm of criticism for financial problems and poor performance, Textor has turned things around significantly. His investment has brought star players to the club such as Argentine Thiago Almada (acquired for $25 million) and winger Luiz Henrique ( $21 million).

Now Botafogo, under the tutelage of American John Textor, has reestablished its place among Brazil’s elite and is looking ahead to the Club World Cup in the United States in 2025, beginning its journey back to prominence. In the United States, according to the draw that took place, Botafogo will face Pachuca, Paris Saint-Germain, Atletico Madrid and Seattle Sounders.
