The french player signs for Olympiakos with a free transfer
Mathieu Valbuena is the first major year’ transfer of Olympiakos. After a season that was unable to retake the championship (last year’s champion was AEK, this year PAOK) began to strengthen its arsenal in view of the new season 2019-2020.
Two years without a championship, the Piraeus team was not used to it. So the owner of the club, ship owner, Vangelis Marinakis decided to put his hand in the pocket again in order to strengthen the red-whites. Besides, the goal of the red-whites is to be able to enter to the UEFA Champions League, or in the … worse scenario to the UEFA Europa League.
On May 17, Marinakis brought to Greece the former international midfielder, Mathieu Valbuena, who did not want to renew his contract with the Turkish, Fenerbahce.
An important role for Valbuena in order to persuade him to continue his career at Olympiakos , was played by his “soccer father”, his compatriot, Jose Anigo. Last year he had worked for a short time in Panionios, but did not find a point of contact with the team’s management and left. But he had very good contacts with both Olympiakos sports managers Francois Modesto and Karembeu .
Valbuena was born in the southwestern commune of Bruges in the Gironde department by his parents, his mother Brigitte and his father Carlos. He is Spanish origin through his father, who is originally from the city of Valladolid. Valbuena’s father works for the city council of Bordeaux. Valbuena grew up nearby Blanquefort where his parents still reside. On 24 December 2010, while traveling to Blanquefort to celebrate Christmas with his parents, Valbuena was involved in a car accident after losing control of his Lamborghini Murcielago while driving near Bègles. He survived the accident without any injuries.
Valbuena (born on 28 September 1984), who arrived in Athens early in the morning , 27th of May, was happy and ready to wear Olympiakos’ vest after passing the necessary medical examinations, then signed his new contract for one (+1 ) year with earnings of € 1.7 million. There are also bonus bonuses in the contract.

Despite Valbuena is 35 years old and has several entries in national France, he showed that he came to Greece not to add a few more … stamps, but to help Olympiakos have a very good course in an European competition It comes from years of full participation and productivity. Not something like Yaya Toure …
Olympiakos’s Portuguese coach, Pedro Martins, plans to see his team come up in the new season, with two striking aggressors making trouble in any well-organized defense.
On the one side it will be Podence, who had some wonderful games last season and on the other side the newly-acquired, Valbueña. So the two ends of the attack will be two siege engines that will help the forward that Olympiakos will have this season.
6th team in his career
Olympiakos will be the 6th team in the Valbueña’s career. Started in Limburg (2004-06, 55 games, 10 goals). Then he went to Marseille (2006-2014, 242 games, 27 goals) where he made his best career so far. Subsequent to Russian, Dynamo Moscow (2014-15, 29 matches, 6 goals). He then went to Lion (2015-17, 56 games, 9 goals) and then moved to Fenerbahce (2017-19, 46 games, 8 goals). In national France he has played 52 times , scoring 8 goals. Now Valbuena, married to the beautiful Fanny Lafon, is determined to add his own unique story to the beautiful book of the emperor of Greek football, Olympiakos!
