Garaba was a football hungarian legend of 80`s years
Imre Garaba at the age of 60, enjoys life playing with his four grandchildren, goes and watches the national Hungary when he struggles, fishing at Lake Balaton when the weather conditions allow him and generally tries to pass calmly and well. He is happy when he talks to us about football. So we talked with him and remembered many and nice things of the past.
Imre Garabas was born on 29 July 1958 in Bats. He was a high-level central defender who played 82 times in his national team and scored 3 goals. He made his debut with National Hungary in 1980. He participated in the World Cups of 1982 and 1986 where Hungary in both of these competitions failed to pass the group stage. Imre was particularly popular among the fans of Honved Budapest, due to his compassion and passion in his game, as well as the considerable number of goals he achieved.
He played a key role in having Budapest Honved win the Hungarian Championship in 1980, as well as in 1984, 1985 and 1986. He later played with Rennes in France and Belgium’s Charleroi, before ending his career back in Hungary with BVSC Budapest , where he also worked as a manager. He has lately not played a role in Hungarian football but remains a popular figure among Honvéd supporters. Gabara speak with Discoveryfootball.com in Budapest.
DF: Now what you are doing Imre?
R/: Now, I live my civil life, I’m free, I have no connection with football. I go to see to the stadium every time the national team of Hungary, and sometimes I go with my grandchildren to Budapest Honved games. I like to go hunting and in the summer time go to fishing to the lake Balaton. I have 4 grandchildren, I play a lot with them, first of all football, but one of them is playing handball. I like to go to there training and tournaments in the week end time.
DF: Why have you seen the Hungarian teams and your national team for so long, so low?
R/: I try to find the reason, but honestly I don’t really know. Players should work really more to be top players. We have now the good infrastucture, but the football is not better. We have academies as well, from where hungarian football doesn’t give determinative players for Hungary. Sincerely I don’t know the reason, the experts have to resolve the problem, and I’m only a supporter of the Hungarian football.
DF: You have, however, made many and important new stadiums.
R/: Yes, we have a government wich give a lot of money for sport, first of all for football. In the last 7-8 years the biggest part of the hungarian teams from the first division got a new stadium, the national stadium, Puskas stadium, is under construction, it will be ready for the end of the year and next year some games of the Euro 2020 will played in this stadium. I’m waiting for the new stadium of my club Honved wich will be ready within 2-3 years. But not only new stadiums, but new academies were built as well, like the new academy of Honved wich was ready in the end of last year.
DF: What happened and where national Hungary was a wonderful team that every fan was happy to see, is it now disappointing?
R/: In this periode only the sport and the art was a possibility for children to be famous. The football was the most popular game, there were more children playing football at this periode. And there was no other possibility like today. It was an honour to be a good player, because there were a lot of advantage. And an other think: at this time football was more a game for the players, now it is more a job.
Detari and Tichy
DF: Let’s go back and forth. The whole world knows about the big magicians football players who have written gold pages. What to do about Puskas, Koscis , Hidegkuti, Albert or later, Detari
R/: Yes, they are the stars of the Hungarian football. Lajos Detari was our last big player, since him, nobody was so famous in Hungary football. This was 30 years ago. I’m happy that I played with Detari in my career in the national team and in Honved as well. I would like to mention one more player, who was a very good player for me: it is Lajos Tichy. I think he was an extra player as well.
DF: What is the reason for this fall in Hungarian football?
R/: The world changed, in Hungary the conditions are not the same than in the time of this stars from who we spoke.
DF: Do young children not love football?
R/: Yes, I have 4 grandchildren, 4 boyes. The biggest one is 11 years old, he is playing handball. I have a 8 and 5 years old, they are playing football in the team where I finished my career, in the team of BVSC. The are good, we will see what will happening with them. The smaller one is 3 years old, he will start football in September.
Puskas, Bozsik, Hidegkuti
DF: In your opinion, who are the leading Hungarians in the history of your football?
R/: From the Gold team I would like to mention Puskas, Bozsik and Hidegkuti. After them Albert, from my generation Detari. And for me Lajos Tichy is an extra player as well. He was my first coach in Honved, It was a pleasure for me to work with him.
DF: You have also been a great coach. Sebes, Bukovi who worked in Greece and others.
R/: Yes, the are extra coaches from the history of Hungary. The wrote the golden pages of our football history. I can mention them as well.
DF: Do you distinguish someone or some of the current Hungarians?
R/: Not really. I can tell you one name who can be an extra player for Hungary, who can be the next Detari. Unfortunately we haven’t good talents who can resolve the situation of our football.
DF: Which teams do you think will be distinguished in the UEFA Champions League for this year?
R/: I support 2 teams: Real Madrid and Liverpool. i hope Liverpool will win the Cup. Real Madrid won 3 times, would be good if this year my other favorite would be the winner.
DF: Messi is the top 15 of the past 15 years?
R/: I think Messi is the top player of the last 100 years. He is a really good player.
DF: Finally, what do you remember from your own time of struggle?
R/: If I have to mention something from my career, is that I played in 2 world cups in 1982 and 1986. This was the top of my career. And I played against all famous players from the years ’80. And if I have to mention 2 players from Greece, they are Anastopoulos and Mitropoulos against who I played and I remember well them.
